When I went to my first yin yoga class a few years ago I instantly fell in love with this beautiful practice. So much, that in September 2019, I traveled all the way to Goa, India to do a Yin Yoga Teacher Training with Alex from Yin Yoga Therapy Training. This was a life changing experience, and I am forever grateful that I took the chance and did the training.
Yin yoga is such a beautiful practice that I truly believe most people would benefit from practicing yin yoga. Actually, I think most people would benefit from incorporating more yin practices into their life in general. We are all so busy, and we live in a world that is constantly changing, moving, and evolving. I often wonder if we have forgotten to enjoy life and be present because we are so busy pursuing material things and not “missing out” on anything…
Anyway, that’s a blog post for another day. For now I would like to talk more about some specific reasons as to why I love yin yoga so much.
5 reasons I love yin yoga
It calms and clears my mind
As the saying goes: the body benefits from movement; the mind benefits from stillness. I am someone who thinks A LOT, and I am generally very much in my head. My mind is constantly spinning with new ideas, dreams, visions and just thoughts. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, and I honestly love how creative my mind is. However, this also means that I find it incredibly hard to quiet this constant mind chatter, and I find that yin yoga really helps me quiet my monkey mind. I find that my mind is more calm and clear after practicing yin yoga.
It’s about being rather than doing
Our life in general is so much about doing, achieving, improving, working harder, and doing more. I find yin yoga is an opportunity for me to just be. Without having to do anything. Without having to work towards something. I can just let go and allow myself to be. To just embrace the moment as it is. Let go of any and all expectations. Not trying to get deeper into a pose. Simply just allow my body and mind to be. It’s pure bliss.
It balances my nervous system
Maybe you have already guessed it but my nervous system tends to get jacked up very easily. This means I need to very consciously do practices that activate the parasympathetic nervous system (the rest and digest nervous system). I find that yin yoga is one of the practices that balances my nervous system and activates my parasympathetic nervous system the most. I think this is because we are relatively still in yin yoga, while also breathing deeply.
It targets my deep fascia and works on my flexibility
I love working on my flexibility, and yin yoga does exactly that. For me personally I find the stretches in yin yoga really yummy. I love feeling a stretch and breathing into it. It really does wonders for me.
It helps me let go of what no longer serves me
I don’t know about you but for me letting go has always been easier said than done. Letting go of what no longer serves us is not always as easy as it sounds. I have gotten much better at it over the years, but there are still some things that I find hard to let go of. I personally find that yin yoga helps me let go of anything I no longer need in my life. No matter what it is. I can’t really explain why or how it happens. All I know is that it happens.
So there you have it. My top 5 reasons why I love yin yoga.
